Wedding Bow Tie

The Wedding Bow Tie

It’s the wedding season again and the “must have” black bow tie is back. At some point we all have to dress our best and for many, that point is their wedding. A wedding bow tie doesn’t have to be black –think about polka dots! Although men’s bow ties are a vital part of their formal look, they don’t have to be boring.
Most of the bow ties seen at weddings are made of silk and, although most are still black, there is a trend towards more “fashion forward” use of polka dot and stripes. The splash of color in these bow ties gives a good contrast between the one color tuxs and formal shirts. But providing this interest in the groomsmen wear is not the only place you can use polka dots.
If bow ties aren’t your thing, the polka dot theme can also be used on pocket squares or neckties in place of the bow tie.
Polka dots can be incorporated into an accent for the entire wedding party. Bridesmaids can have polka dot hair bows or ribbons. The polka dotted hair accessories don’t have to match the polka dot pattern exactly, they just need to be in the same color range as the polka dot bow ties of the groomsmen.
Even the bride can carry the polka dot theme forward with either a small polka dot accessory or a white on white polka dot pattern on the gown.
A polka dot pattern gives the wedding a decidedly fun and summery look. Making a light hearted fashion statements as part of the wedding does not diminish the serious of the moment. Although overuse of the theme could make the event and participants clownish, careful use can make the ceremony and theme memorable for both the guests and wedding party. Too often the same theme is used for all weddings and after awhile they all start to blend together and guests don’t remember one event from another.
If used sparingly, the polka dot theme make the wedding decorations look more polished and sophisticated than it would with more standard decorations.
If you aren’t sure you want to go “all the way” with polka dots throughout your wedding decorations, you could use it as the “wedding bow tie” for the groomsmen and leave it at that.
